The overall objective of the course is to gain understanding of how environmental problems are analyzed in economics.
The first part of the course focuses on the role of government in the regulation of the environment. The welfare theoretic foundation of social choice is discussed followed by how to apply welfare analysis of environmental problems by the use of methods to measure environmental benefits.
The second part of the course focuses on policy instruments. An overview of different types of regulations is provided and the properties of different policy instruments are discussed in detail. Also, the effect of market imperfections as well as imperfect information on the choice of policy instrument is discussed. The lectures will also provide the students with a number of real world examples of policy instruments.
